Upper Mustang Tea House Trek

The culture is a beautiful amalgamation of Tibetan and Buddhist traditions. Although it was once an independent state with full control being exercised by the “Raja” or the head of the state, the culture of the people of the upper mustang region bears great resemblance to that followed by Tibetan Buddhists.

Going on the upper mustang trek is a great way to experience the old world charm of the Himalayan mountain deserts. Several old and new monasteries and ancient caves line the trek. The word mustang comes from two Tibetan words “mun” and “tan” roughly translated as the "fertile plain". Mustang earlier known as the Kingdom of Lo was once an independent state. Because of a ruling passed by the government of Nepal on October 7, 2008, the state lost its independent status. Raja Jigme Dorje Palbar Bista was the last king of the region.

Mustang remained in the confines of anonymity until the government of Nepal granted access to western tourists in October 1991. However, the government still places several restrictions on the number of tourists entering the protected province. The government takes several measures to protect the environment and people from western influence. Special permit passes are required to gain entry into the region.

The trek takes off with a trip to the Kathmandu valley. Kathmandu has several tourist attractions. Home to seven world heritage sites listed by the UNESCO and at least 130 significant monuments, the place has a lot to offer. The next day we drive off to Pokhara, a scenic town full of beautiful lakes. Over a period of 17 days, several places are visited that include Jomsom, Kagbeni, Chele, Geling, Charang, Namgyal Gompa and Tingkhar. Tourists will also get the chance to explore the Kali Gandaki river valley, which is believed to form some of the deepest gorges in the world.
