Bardia National Park

The national park prides itself on being home to various endangered animals-the Royal Bengal tiger, Great one-horned rhinoceros, wild elephants, black bucks, gharial-crocodiles, marsh mugger, Gangetic dolphins and Swamp deer. There are six different species of deer inhabiting the national park. Chital aka the spotted deer, hog deer a smaller cousin of the chital family, Sambhar-the largest deer not only in Nepal but the Indian subcontinent, as well. The Sambhar has relatively bigger and thicker antlers than his counterparts. The Swamp Deer or Barasingha and the Barking Deer are other species of deer in the park. The Swamp Deer is an endangered species, reportedly extinct in Pakistan and Bangladesh but found in the isolated forests of India and Nepal. It is also called the Barasingha because of its characteristic feature of having 12 horns or tines (“Bara” meaning twelve and “Singha” horns in Hindi).

After the Chitwan National park, Bardai national park has the second largest population of tigers in the country. There is every chance that you may spot a streak of tigers on the way. There are other wild animals, some so rare that only a handful of them remain in the world and some which are found only in Nepal. One of them is the Himalayan tahr, a native of the Himalayas and the only remaining member of the genus Hemitragus. Until recently, it was believed that the distant cousin of the wild goat had become extinct, but recent sightings have confirmed that they still exist.

Also, there is the Sloth bear with a particularly unique “V” labeled on its chest, Blue bull also known as Nilgai, sighting who is considered to usher in good luck according to Hindu beliefs, Serow and Goral, members of the goat-antelope family and smaller mammals such as the Langur monkey and Jackal and rare birds including the yellow-throated Marten, Mongoose and Indian Otter.

The ideal time to visit Bardai National Park is October through March. Certainly, the place is a delight for wildlife lovers.
